My Story

Charles de Gaulle, born in Lille, France, in 1890, was a soldier, statesman, and one of the most influential figures in 20th-century French history. Raised in a patriotic and intellectual family, de Gaulle attended the prestigious Saint-Cyr Military Academy, where he developed a deep interest in military strategy and politics. His experiences during World War I, where he served with distinction and endured captivity as a prisoner of war, shaped his vision of France as a resilient and independent nation. In the interwar years, he emerged as a forward-thinking military theorist, advocating for the modernization of French armed forces with a focus on armored warfare.

During World War II, de Gaulle rose to prominence as the leader of the Free French Forces. Refusing to accept France’s surrender to Nazi Germany in 1940, he fled to London, where he rallied French resistance against the Axis powers through his impassioned broadcasts and leadership. His vision of France’s liberation culminated in the triumphal return to Paris in 1944. After the war, de Gaulle temporarily withdrew from politics, disillusioned by factionalism in the government. However, his legacy as a wartime leader made him a national hero and a symbol of French unity and independence.

In 1958, amid a political crisis in Algeria, de Gaulle returned to power, founding the Fifth Republic and serving as its first president. During his presidency, he pursued policies that strengthened France’s economy, restored its global influence, and asserted its independence from superpower dominance, including withdrawing from NATO’s integrated military command. His vision of a strong and sovereign France left an indelible mark on the nation. After retiring in 1969, he spent his final years writing memoirs and reflecting on his legacy. De Gaulle passed away in 1970, but his contributions to France remain deeply revered.
