Edwin Booth

Edwin Booth, born in 1833 in Bel Air, Maryland, was destined for the stage as the son of the celebrated Shakespearean actor Junius Brutus Booth. Raised in a family dedicated to the theater, Edwin made his acting debut at 16, filling in for his father and quickly proving his talent. While he initially performed alongside his family, he soon distinguished himself as a gifted actor in his own right. His interpretation of Shakespearean characters, especially Hamlet, became legendary, and he was celebrated for bringing emotional depth and complexity to his roles, which audiences found both moving and profound.

Booth’s career soared in the 1850s and 1860s, securing his reputation as “The Prince of Players.” However, his life took a dark turn in 1865 when his brother, John Wilkes Booth, assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.
